The Demarcated Region of the Douro is one of the oldest wine regions in the world, it was demarcated and regulated, by a Decree from 1756, from the Marquis of Pombal. It is the product of the combination between the work of nature and that of Men.

Firstly, the River opened its deep bed, then Man's hard work adapted its steepy and geometrical cliffs to wine culture, lastly the climate made its contribution for the production of that which is considered as one of the World's best wines - The Port wine, within the background of a unique and unmatchable landscape.

In December of 2001, part of this region was listed as World heritage by Unesco, under the name "Região Vinhateira do Alto Douro" [The Upper Douro Wine Region], including 25 thousand hectares in a diversity of areas divided by three different routes - The Lower Corgo, The Upper Corgo and the Upper Douro, spread through 13 counties: Mesão Frio, Peso da Régua, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Vila Real, Alijó, Sabrosa, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Torre de Moncorvo, Lamego, Armamar, Tabuaço, São João da Pesqueira and Vila Nova de Foz Côa; and stretching along the margins of the River Douro and its tributaries, Varosa, Corgo, Távora, Torto and Pinhão.

Today, besides Porto Wine, the Region also offers top quality table wines, plus the Moscatel and sparkling wine.
